That’s right! It’s PVTA’s Annual Spring Trail Clean Up Day!

Come by for a coffee, have a pancake, and get ready to put a little time back into the trails.

The PVTA will be hosting a free pancake breakfast (buying a Membership is suggested) beside the Pemberton Bike Co. After breakfast we’ll break up into groups and head out to clean up and clear out the trails around town.

This is a great opportunity to learn a bit about the upkeep of the trails and spend some time outside with your neighbours. No trail maintenance experience is necessary. Just bring some gloves, saws, tools, shovels, picks, rakes, buckets…. whatever tools you have around.

If you can’t come out on Saturday, send us an email and let us know what trails need some work.

See y’all there!

When: Saturday April 21, 2012 – 9:00am

Where: Pemberton Bike Co.

Why: ’Cause you love the trails around here and you want fix up a few things that have been bothering you….

2012 Trail Work

- with local governments financial support the Mt. Currie trail is moving ahead

- it will be decided in the next few months what the Summer maintenance projects should be and those projects should be put out to tender (NIMBY, Lumpy’s, Chain Lakes/Trapper’s Descent….)

- the PWA will be undertaking some trail enhancements in the Tenquille Lake area – it was decided that the PVTA should aid the PWA in this area either through a donation or through an organized volunteer day

NIMBY 50 Race

- some Directors feel that more than $1000 should be donated to the PVTA from the race

- a $5-$10 per rider fee was suggested and will be proposed to the organizers

2012 PVTA Funding:

The PVTA has been granted the following funding:

$20,000 Core Funding

$5,000 for a Blue Trail in the MacKenzie area

$20,000 for the Mt.Currie Trail – this amount to be held in reserve until the PVTA has sufficient matching funds

Attached to the funding is a report to be submitted and presented to the SLRD on how the public money was spent over the year.

2012 Spring Trail Day – it was suggested that the focus should be on the trail Overnight Sensation in memory of Duncan MacKenzie.

The Trails BC AGM will be held in Pemberton on April 28, 2012 – the Board has already pledged its support of this event.

Presentation by Nigel Protter and Jim Orava

Due to Pemberton being awarded the host of 2012 Canadian National Paragliding Championships (August 5-12), Nigel Protter and Jim Orava requested the PVTA’s support to help rebuild the Mackenzie Basin FSR. The request was that the PVTA would apply for a GasTax grant in the order of $100,000 from the BC Provincial government. As this road is a main access route and would help support non-motorized use of the area, the Directors felt this was within our mandate and agreed to help.

Coming up on March 14, 2012 the Pemberton Valley Trail Association will host it’s Annual General Meeting.

With Spring just around the corner, the PVTA is beginning to put together its Spring and Summer work schedule. Come out to the AGM and let us know what trails are a priority to you. With the generous funding from the SLRD this year is going to be a busy one! The focus is going to be on maintaining our extensive network of trails, the construction of a Blue Difficulty trail in the Mackenzie area accessible off of NIMBY, and the construction of a new hiking route up Mt. Currie.

The PVTA is still in the process of fundraising to make this great trail a reality. To date we have raised approximately half of the estimated $60,000 required to built the trail.

A huge thanks to Len Richie and Randy West of the Pony Expresso for a $1000 donation towards the Mt. Currie Trail!

At the AGM we will be electing new Directors to the Board so if you are interested in getting involved with PVTA be mark this meeting in your calendar. If you cannot attend the meeting you can always email us.

When: 7:00 PM – Wednesday March 14, 2012

Where: Cottonwood Community Centre

See you there!

Hats off to all who have taken the time to keep these trails in great condition almost year round. And hats off to Nigel Protter and his brilliant placement of our classic climbing trail.

The PVTA will soon be going to the local government boards looking for funding. We need your help. This is public funding, so it’s your money. If you like what the PVTA has done with the funding we have received over the last few years. (Stimulus, Nimby, Middle Earth, Skelula7, Chain, Gravatrout, Cloudbase 9) please send a comment or testimonial to the contact link on this web site. We are going to gather as many of these as we can to show that the people who use the trails are happy with the world class network we are developing and maintaining here in Pemberton.

Some of the items on the agenda for next year include:- A new “Blue” descent in the Mackenzie zone.

- A link from town and the Tour de soo rd. to Nairn Falls and the new Sea to Sky trail

-A hiking Trail up Mount Currie

-Maintenance and upgrades for existing trails.

Thanks for all the great comments and compliments we have received already about the trails. Keep your fingers crossed that we can have another great year.

Pemberton Valley Trails Association

Minutes of Special Meeting October 24, 2011

Location: Cottonwood Recreation Centre

The purpose of the meeting was to determine major projects / key areas of interest that the PVTA should be focusing on in 2012.

Suggestions:

- smooth out and widen NIMBY climbing trail

- reroute sections of Mackenzie Cruise to make it a “Blue” descent MTB trail

- New “Blue” descent MTB trail from mid Middle Earth to Overnight

- New trail “Blue” descent MTB trail from mid NIMBY to Waco Connector

- More Valley trails – easier multi use (hike, bike, run, horse)

- improved/more parking at the Gravel Pit – addition of toilets/port- a-potties

- New trail “Blue” descent or ascent MTB trail in One Mile area

- new “Green-Blue” loop – Sea to Sky to Nairn Falls back to town along Tour de Soo

- Better alpine access – either via Chain/Fowl/Ogre Lake or Will Bill to Heart Lake

- Waterfall trail

- Mt. Currie summit trail

List of Priorities:

1) Blue MTB descent trail (new from NIMBY or short Tour de Soo loop)

2) Alpine access (mostly Mt. Currie)

3) Overall trail maintenance

4) Trails signs

5) Valley trails (Waterfall included)

Notes for the PVTA:

Core Funding should be for trail maintenance – enter into a Service Contract with SLRD with defined deliverables and a trail inspection at the end of year with SLRD.

PVTA immediately needs a working group to consult with VOP regarding the Hillside development.
